Greenwashing:

Greenwashing, also called “green sheen”, is a form of marketing spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization’s products, aims and policies are environmentally friendly.

Yikes! Thanks Wikepedia.

I wish I knew about this 25 years ago when I had my first baby.

I eventually figured it out, but it wasn’t because somebody told me.

So here I am today to let you know, just in case you’ve never heard of it!

GREENWASHING

Greenwashing has been around probably as long as we’ve had people waking up and realising that the products they were putting on their family weren’t really that nice.

Companies recognised a trend that mummas and care-givers were looking for natural solutions and environmentally friendly products, especially those with little ones that were struggling with conditions like asthma and eczema. So they rebranded their products, or came up with some new ones, that would be more appealing and sell well in the market.

Sadly, greenwashing is a ploy to make you think you’re doing the right thing, using “natural” products, but when you dig a little deeper and research the ingredient list, you find out that what you thought you were putting on your brand new baby, isn’t “organic” at all and it’s actually really bad for the environment.

Yep, that was me. I trusted the company and brand because the label said things like “100% pure” and “organic”. It had a pretty picture of a cute baby and a serene earth and I thought, this HAS to be natural.

I was horrified to discover that what I was putting on my little one had ingredients that were linked to infertility, hormone disruption, asthma, neurological problems and skin allergies.

From that moment on I decided to always look closer and make sure the company truly delivers a product that is safe and beneficial to me, my family and the planet.

So how do you feel about greenwashing?

Let me know down below.

Strawberries are such a delightful fruit and homegrown, oh my goodness, there is nothing that beats that sweet, juicy taste. We love them in smoothies, as a topper for acai bowls, yoghurt and granola and even just on their own!

Remember to wash thoroughly if you are not buying organic or growing your own. Unfortunately, strawberries are one of the most heavily sprayed fruits in commercial growing.

See here for a list of the Dirty Dozen.

And here are some of the amazing health benefits of strawberries..

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect your cells against free-radical damage and it helps form and maintain bones, skin, and blood vessels.

MANGANESE

Manganese helps the body form connective tissue, bones, blood clotting factors, and sex hormones. It also plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption and blood sugar regulation. Manganese is also necessary for normal brain and nerve function.

FOLATE

Folate is an essential B vitamin that is necessary for the production of red and white blood cells in bone marrow, producing DNA and RNA and transforming carbohydrates into energy.

POTASSIUM

Potassium helps the body maintain normal levels of intracellular fluid and it also helps muscles to contract, supporting normal blood pressure.

Do you love strawberries?

Have you tried growing them at home?

Let me know if they are your favourite fruit!

Once upon a time we didn’t call food organic or non-organic, it was just food.

Can we all just go back to that please?

It bothers me that organic farmers have to prove their organic-ness and pay for organic accreditation just so we, the consumers, know their food is just as nature intended. Shouldn’t it be the other way round?

I’m not an agricultural expert by any means but I have grown my own and know all too well the effort it takes to produce a crop without the use of synthetic pesticides.

And that’s just for my little backyard garden!

So, why do we want to avoid these nasty chemicals in the first place?

Pesticides are toxic chemicals designed to kill agricultural pests and unfortunately when consumed by humans have been linked to cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, ADHD and even birth defects.

THE DIRTY DOZEN AND CLEAN 15

The EWG’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ (aka Dirty Dozen and Clean 15) is updated each year and ranks pesticide contamination on 47 popular fruits and vegetables.

While this isn’t Aussie specific, it does give you a very good indication of the types of fruits and vegetables that are the most hard hit.

We don’t want to avoid any fruits and vegetables, so if you can’t buy local and organic, opt for an all natural fruit and veggie wash like the Thieves Fruit and Veggie Soak as a great alternative.

We actually use it even on our organic bought produce and it’s surprising to see what’s left in the water and the difference it makes to the longevity of our fresh food.

SUPPORTING LOCAL FARMERS

Many local farmers grow their crops using all or mostly organic practices but aren’t big enough, or simply choose not to, pay for accreditation. It makes sense to get to know them and ask them how they do things so that you can happily buy their produce and feel good knowing you are not only supporting them but also giving your family high quality and nutrient dense local foods.

Do you know where your local organic market is?

Or are you growing your own!

Let me know in the comments.

Lavender is such an underrated essential oil, maybe because it’s so readily available!

Do you have some at home? Most people do.

Or maybe you have a grandma who used to grow it in her garden..

12 REASONS TO LOVE LAVENDER

  1. Lavender works on serotonin receptors in the body to help balance the mood. It has been used to treat anxiety and depression and it helps to calm the nerves. Use it after a long day when you feel mentally and physically drained and any time you need to de-stress.
  2. Lavender helps regulate sleep patterns and prepares the body for a restful night’s sleep. Insomnia is a common issue today and studies have shown that the chemical structure of lavender may increase time spent in deep, slow-wave sleep. Sprinkle a few drops on your pillow or diffuse at bedtime.
  3. Lavender is soothing and balancing to the skin. Use it on itchy bites or any areas that are red or inflamed. Skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis may also benefit from lavender’s soothing nature. Use it to hydrate irritated and sensitive skin.
  4. Lavender naturally contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and can be a useful ally during seasonal changes. Dilute and apply topically alongside the nose, sinus, throat and chest area and try a swipe along the inside of cheek. Be sure to always only use the absolute purest and unadulterated essential oils. Most on the market are not what they say they are!
  5. Lavender helps fight infections with its natural antiseptic and antifungal properties. Keep it on hand to treat minor cuts, scrapes, irritations and burns. Lavender essential oil is also great for when you’ve been a little too kissed by the sun. Combine with aloe vera or use on its own.
  6. Lavender promotes hair growth by protecting the hair follicles from oxidative stress. Add it to your all natural hair care routine to nourish the scalp, or try out this Mermaid Waves Hair Spray recipe!
  7. Lavender helps to relax the muscles, reducing discomfort in the body. Dilute and apply topically to any areas that need support. Apply to the temples and breathe in the aroma to help alleviate a tight headache. (Try peppermint if your headache is of the pounding variety).
  8. Lavender can even out skin tone and help reduce redness. It may also help to prevent scarring by promoting cell and tissue growth. Lavender helps to balance acne prone skin.
  9. Lavender helps promote collagen synthesis and stimulates fibroblasts, making it a good choice for wound healing. Quick application post-injury can also reduce bruising. Try making a cool compress.
  10. Lavender has antioxidant properties that protect the skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays that accelerate the skin’s aging process. Use it in your favourite organic moisturiser or make a facial spritz and use any time of the day.
  11. Lavender supports respiratory and immune health. Use it alongside eucalyptus and frankincense (or on its own) during times of physical exhaustion or anytime you need to breathe deeply and easily.
  12. Lavender is a true adaptogen bringing peace and calm to you and your personal space. Breathe in straight from the bottle or diffuse in your favourite ultrasonic diffuser for lasting, healing benefits.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PURE

Lavender is such a readily available and abundant herb that you don’t have to look far to find the essential oil on the shelves. Unfortunately there is no governing body that ensures that what you purchase is actually what’s written on the label. Many manufacturers cut corners, adulterate and synthetically manipulate their “essential oils” to reduce costs but at the end of the day you are left with a product that has no therapeutic value and can even cause more harm then good!

If you have ever received a headache from smelling Lavender essential oil, it may very well be because it was synthetically put together or had a synthetic component added to it. It really pays to know where your oils come from and how the plants are farmed, harvested and distilled.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SPRING?

Spring time for many people can be overwhelming and frustrating.

It’s usually when pollen and other allergens are at an all time high, exacerbating asthma and hayfever conditions. I struggled with this for many years and still do some times when I haven’t been sleeping well.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

My go to for this time of the year is to reach for my oils and apply topically to the throat, chest and feet. I also take a little extra Sulfurzyme, which is an organic form of sulfur (MSM). That helps to settle things down really quickly.

THE SEASONAL TRIO

Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint essential oils smell amazing together. 4 drops each in a roller bottle, topped up with carrier oil and you are good to go. This blend has worked for me and countless others as well.

As soon as I feel any discomfort coming on or I know I’ve been exposed and haven’t been sleeping well, I roll it on the bottoms of the feet, chest and throat. You can also pop the oils in a diffuser instead if you prefer to stick to inhalation methods. Two drops each in a nasal inhaler may help as well.

HAVE YOU TRIED ESSENTIAL OILS BEFORE?

Let me know if you try this blend and if it gives you some relief.

I have a free Essential Oils Course if you are brand new and a discount code for superior essential oils here.

Ever since the 1980’s Australians have been raised to Slip Slop and Slap. And for good reason. They don’t call us the Sunburnt Country for nothing!!

THE PROBLEM

The problem is, most sunscreens out on the market today do more harm than good.

Not only are they destroying coral and polluting the ocean and waterways, they are also significantly causing health problems in the human body too!

TOXIC INGREDIENTS

Have you looked at the ingredients in your sunscreen?

Many are carcinogenic, meaning they cause Cancer. My family have been using natural sunscreens for many years now, and often we don’t use one at all. The sun’s not bad, we just need to be sensible with exposure.

YOUR CHOICE

Obviously, EVERY BODY and family is different so keep taking care of your family the best you can and research the ingredients in your current sunscreen.

If there are any nasties in there, ditch it and switch it out for an all natural one. All natural, mineral based sunscreens can be very effective and often have BENEFICIAL ingredients that help to nourish your body and skin.

Staying Safe in the Sun is a Priority, Don’t You Think?

WHAT WE USE

We are a family who loves the outdoors, especially the beach. We live on the beautiful Gold Coast and spend a lot of time in and out of the water, enjoying the warm weather and bright, sunny days.

On top of choosing sensible times to venture out in the sun, and covering up with hats and swim shirts, we also use an all natural sunscreen from Young Living.

THE BENEFITS

Young Living Mineral Sunscreen Lotion is a mineral-based, non-toxic sunscreen that has SPF 50+, including water and sweat resistant protection for 80 minutes.

Not only does it protect against both UVA and UVB rays, (most only protect against UVB to prevent superficial sunburn) it does this without using nanoparticles. Nanoparticles are so small, they can penetrate cells and cross the blood-brain barrier. The risks are still unknown however, once in the brain they pose two major threats.

  1. induce oxidative activity (production of Reactive Oxygen Species), and
  2. induce anomalous protein aggregation behaviour (fibrillation).

There needs to be more research done, especially in conjunction with known fibrillation diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson disease, and most agree that it is best to avoid nanoparticles until we know all the associated risks.

BE SAFE

Young Living chooses to only ever produce products that are KNOWN to be safe, and this beautiful sunscreen is one of their many non-toxic and chemical-free products that you can be certain will do no harm to you or your family.

NEXT STEP

Ok, so there are two ways to purchase this beautiful, safe product so you can have fun in the sun without receiving irreparable damage to the skin.

1. Grab it at wholesale like I do. This is by far the best option. This is how I buy all my favourite Young Living products at a discount. Simply choose a Starter Bundle and add the sunscreen OR complete a Customised Enrolment Order.

You can learn more by going here. Use referral # 1706951 so you get the discount! And be sure to message me so I can help you maximise the freebies and bonus products with your order and get to know you a little more.

OR

2. A standard retail purchase. Retail products are 24% more than wholesale membership pricing. You’ll still get exclusive access to our online community with daily tips, recipes, DIYs and ongoing support, so still sing out if you choose this option!

Again, be sure to use the member referral # 1706951 when ordering, so Young Living link you in with me and I can personally support you and add you to our health and wellness community group.
